Coffee, Caffeine and Health

The overall conclusion from literally thousands of published scientific studies is that moderate coffee consumption, of 4-5 cups per day, is perfectly safe for the general population and may confer health benefits.

Coffee can be an important source of fluid in the diet.

Moderate coffee consumption is not associated with the development of cancer.

Moderate coffee consumption is not associated with the development of heart conditions.

In the general population regular, moderate intake of coffee has little or no effect on blood pressure. Coffee as drunk in the UK has no effect on blood cholesterol levels.

The British Heart Foundation says up to six cups of coffee per day will not significantly affect a person's risk of coronary heart disease.

Pregnant women should consider 200mgs of caffeine per day (2-3 cups of coffee) as a safe limit for mother and baby.

For those people who are sensitive to the effects of caffeine, or find that it delays sleep when consumed later in the day, decaffeinated coffee carries no adverse effects and can be drunk freely.
